Junior Cup Final

Murroe 3 Moyross 2

First up was our Junior Cup Final which saw Murroe v Moyross kick off proceedings. This proved to be a great game which probably had Moyross start as slight favourites. The game started with both teams settling into the game and testing each other’s defences on what was a very wet day Moyross opened the scoring after some great play but to Murroe’s credit they fought back and equalized shortly after. They then pushed on and scored a second and went into the break at half time with the score 2 – 1 in their favour but Moyross were always a threat and scored their second goal within a few minutes of the restart. The game proved to be a really exciting affair with end to end passages of play it was during one of these attacks that Murroe managed to get through on goal with a one on one situation and just managed to get the ball past the Moyross keeper to go in front again. This score was to be the final one of the game and saw Murroe hold on in the face of some serious pressure put on by Moyross. Great credit must go to Murroe’s keeper who pulled off some fantastic saves to keep Murroe in front until the final whistle with Nichole Bennett pulling off  a hat-trick and the Player of the Match Trophy. Both teams have to take credit for producing what can only be described as an epic Cup Final congratulations to both for the effort shown.

Division 1 Cup

Regional United 2 Lifford 3

Second up was our Division 1 cup Final which saw the two top teams from the Division Lifford & Regional square off once again in the Markets Field. This was again a great game which saw both teams battling hard from the start to gain the upper hand and it was Regional who struck first with a great first goal of the game from Laura Lyons. This seemed to settle the nerves and the Lifford ladies found it very hard going at times against what was some very tight marking across the back by all the Regional girls who gave the Lifford Ladies little time to settle, score was 1 – 0 in Regional’s favour at half time. The second half continued in a similar vein with Regional making some great attacks and still remaining very solid at the back in face of some great attacks from Lifford who were trying hard to get the scores back level but it was Regional who got the scoreboard going again with another great goal to go 2 – 0 in front It seemed that Regional were on the cusp of a great win but to their credit Lifford never stopped battling and were rewarded in the 85th minute with their first goal of the game. This resulted in a very nervy last few minutes with only seconds on the clock Lifford scored the equalizer with a fantastic shot from Mary Tierney from outside the box into the roof of the Regional net which then resulted in the game going to extra time. To their credit Lifford pushed on and scored their third and the winning goal in the first half of extra time through the hat-trick hero Mary Tierney giving her the player of the Match Trophy. Great credit to both teams on what was again an outstanding advertisement for ladies Soccer in Limerick
